Tennessee's first county - America's first county named in honor of George Washington.

Located in the shadow of the Southern Appalachians, Washington County has a unique blend of attractions: history, scenery, mild climate summer and winter, low taxes and quality services. Our people are descended from pioneers like Daniel Boone, David Crockett, Andrew Jackson, John Sevier, and from the Cherokee who were here first, as well as from African-Americans who founded some of the first free black churches in the South.

One of the fastest growing regions in America, Washington County continues to offer an attractive climate to both tourism and industry. With no state tax on earned income, and personal property taxes of only $2.00 per $100 of assessed valuation, excellent medical facilities in part due to the presence of the Quillen College of Medicine at East Tennessee State University, Washington County also has become a mecca for retirement home building.

County government is centered around the County Seat in Historic Jonesborough, and in the Downtown Centre of Johnson City. County officials are defined by Tennessee law and supplemented by other county service providers.

Following is a break down of how the tax dollars are distributed to the various county departments:

1. General Fund: $0.63
2. Road Dept.: $0.14
3. Schools: $0.82
4. Debt Services: $0.36
5. Sanitation: $0.05

**Note: The above information is based on the current tax rate of $2.00.
